Elder Academy Academic Operations

Academic Policy
  • Elders who meet the completion requirements receive a certificate of completion.
  • Initially this is an in-house course for Onnuri Church elders only, but it is to be developed into an open course that also includes elders from other churches.
Learning Characteristics
  • Most instructors are elders or outside experts; rather than lecture-style teaching, the academy aims for self-directed, discussion-based learning
  • Lecture materials and recorded videos are stored and shared on the Onnuri Church website (available on both web and mobile), so you can study on your own before or after each session.
  • During the course, participants read through the whole Bible together. (Graduating elders name this as the most rewarding part.)
  • Participants are divided into groups; an executive committee elder also joins each group, and a group leader and secretary serve in each.
  • After each lecture, every group discusses the material; the following week, a pre-assigned group compiles and presents its discussion results, followed by further discussion.
  • Since getting to know one another is the most important goal of the academy, participating elders are given opportunities to intercede for one another and build fellowship.
Learning Method

The academy aims for self-directed learning based on adult learning methodology.

(1) Sharing lecture materials

  • An "Elder Academy Community" is created on the Onnuri Church website (available on both web and mobile), where lecture materials, lecture videos and reference books from past and current cohorts are shared during the course.
  • Lecture materials and reference books recommended by guest instructors are posted to the community so participants can prepare in advance.

(2) Discussion and group presentations

  • All participants are divided into groups, and a group leader and secretary are appointed to serve in each.
  • After each lecture, every group discusses the assigned topics; the pre-assigned group compiles and presents its discussion results the following week and leads the Q&A.

(3) Fellowship

  • Getting to know one another during the Elder Academy is also one of the course goals; participating elders intercede for one another and build fellowship.
  • For broader fellowship, the groups are reshuffled once during the course so that elders can widen their circle of fellowship in a new group.
Standard Schedule
Standard schedule: timetable from 18:50-19:00 arrival and welcome through 20:55-21:00 announcements and closing prayer
Discussion and Group Presentations
  • All participants are divided into groups, and a group leader and secretary are appointed to serve in each.
  • After each lecture, every group discusses the assigned topics; the pre-selected group gives a presentation and leads the Q&A
  • The day's discussion and Q&A are summarized and posted to the community
Fellowship
  • Getting to know one another during the Elder Academy is also one of the course goals; participating elders intercede for one another and build fellowship
  • Group outreach and fellowship gatherings are organized
Code of Conduct for Onnuri Church Elders
  • Through the Elder Academy, elders learn what an elder must and must not do
  • At the completion ceremony, the code of conduct is presented and the elders pledge to keep it
  • "The Model of an Onnuri Church Elder Living as a Little Jesus"is established and introduced to the next cohort
