The Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:1~14)

2016.03.27Stephen Cha

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: through his death and resurrection he prepares a place for us, makes a way to the Father, reveals God's love, and gives life, so we can be adopted as God's children and trust in him.

Jesus' death leads us to the Father's house (1-3)

Jesus said he was going to prepare a place for his disciples. His death is not the end of everything and is not a punishment for something bad he did. His death, resurrection, and ascension lead us to the Father's house. Jesus is leading us through his death to the Father. Those who come to know God as their loving Father will live with him forever, and that is the most important thing about heaven. Jesus' death makes us his children and frees us from living as orphans.

Jesus makes a way to God (6)

Thomas said they did not know the way, and Jesus answered that he is the way. The preacher compared this to a navigation app that led him to a mountain instead of the right address, and said that we need a bridge or path to reach God. Many people think good deeds will take them to heaven, but the Bible teaches that the way to God is through an innocent substitute who pays the penalty for sin. Jesus paid the price for our sins with his death, and that makes him the way.

Jesus reveals the truth about God's love

Jesus said he is the truth, and he is not making up stories. He reveals who God really is. At the center of the universe are the Father and the Son, and the Father loved us so much that he gave his one and only Son to take our punishment so that we could be forgiven and adopted as his children. The greatest truth in the universe is that God loved the world and gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.

Jesus gives life by exchanging his own

Jesus is the life, the one who raised Lazarus from the dead and who came to give abundant life. He took our place and exchanged his perfect righteousness for our sin. When we trust in him, we receive forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life as his children. Eternal life is not only a long time but a life lived together with God as his beloved. Jesus' death leads us to the Father, shows God's love, makes a way for us to come to him, and offers life that lasts forever.

Believe in Jesus and receive what he has done

Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled, and believe in God and also in me. Many people already believe in God, but Jesus asks us to believe in him as well. The preacher hopes that as we think about what Jesus has done, we will place our trust in him and receive it as true for ourselves. Mary's sorrow became joy when she met the risen Lord, the disciples' fear was removed, and Thomas's doubt was gone when he met Jesus and worshiped him as Lord and God. If anyone has not yet trusted him, Jesus came to die for you and can give you forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life.

Apply to Life

  • Let us believe in Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life, and trust what he has done for us on the cross.
  • Let us receive forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life in Jesus Christ as God's adopted children.
  • Let us stop relying on our own good works to reach God and rest in the way Jesus made for us.
  • Let us rejoice in the risen Jesus, who turns sorrow into joy and fear into the courage to witness.
  • Let us open our hearts to Jesus and respond to him in worship this Resurrection Sunday.
