Community & Discipleship
A Life Worth Living (Ecc 4:4-16)
A life worth living is one that knows the true profit of being possessed by Christ, the value of people in community, and the value of poverty of spirit before God. Life is measured not by possessions or envy but by investing in what lasts for eternity.
Life is worth living when we know the value of true profit (4-6)
The Preacher observes that much of our work is driven by envy, as we keep chasing what our neighbors have, and he calls it vanity and a striving after wind. Those who misunderstand work tend toward two extremes. The lazy fool destroys his own life, while the workaholic never has enough and is never satisfied. True profit does not come from possessions but from gaining Christ. Jesus warns that a person who gains the whole world and forfeits his soul has gained nothing at all, so we should pursue what is eternal rather than what will one day be buried and burned.
Life is worth living when we know the value of people (7-12)
The man with no son or brother toils endlessly and never asks for whom he is working, and a life lived only for self leaves us empty. The lordship of Christ means that he decides our majors, careers, and spending, and that God gives us abundance so that we can bless others, including the orphan, the widow, and the poor. The preacher also says that two are better than one, since we need each other when we fall. Admitting our need for community is not weakness but wisdom according to Scripture, and it is especially hard for men who often have no close friend by age 35.
Life is worth living when we know the value of poverty (13-15)
True poverty is not having little money but having no faith in the God who owns everything, provides for his people, and is enough. Wisdom and the fear of the Lord are worth more than a king's crown, and Proverbs teaches that a little with the fear of the Lord is better than great treasure with trouble. Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, who realize they can bring nothing good to God and that everything they have is from him and for him. Our true value comes from our position before God as citizens and heirs of his kingdom, not from our standing in this world.
Apply to Life
- Let us examine whether Jesus is Lord over our studies, careers, and major decisions.
- Let us invest our money, time, and service in things that will last for eternity.
- Let us pray that Jesus would be our treasure, our goal, and our gain.
- Let us get connected to a small group and lean on other believers when we fall.
- Let us confess our poverty before God and live as those who are poor in spirit.
- Let us value every person as precious, including the orphans of Korea and North Korea, and be a voice for them.
