Who is this man? (Joh. 1:1~18)

2015.09.20Stephen Cha

Jesus is the eternal Word who was with God and was God, the Creator through whom all things were made, the light and life of people, and God who became flesh to show us grace and truth.

Jesus is the eternal Word who was God from the beginning (1-2)

Before Genesis 1 begins, before time, space, and matter, the Word already was. John 1:1 tells us that the Word was with God and the Word was God. Jesus is not a spiritual force or a helper who appeared later; he is the ever-existing, ever-present God. From the beginning he stood in an intimate, face-to-face relationship with the Father. Seeing this, we understand that the Jesus who lives in us is far greater than we had imagined.

Jesus is the Creator through whom all things were made (3)

John 3 emphasizes that nothing was created apart from Jesus. The New Testament says the same in Colossians 1:16-17, Hebrews 1:2, Revelation 4:11, and 1 Corinthians 8:6, where all things come through Jesus. To picture the vastness of his creation, the message compares the speed of light, the distance of the sun, and the size of the largest known stars. Yet this Creator God lives within those who believe, which both humbles us and assures us that he is powerful enough to help.

Jesus is the light and life that darkness cannot overcome (4-5, 12-13)

In him was life, and that life is the light of people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The message illustrates this with a pitch-dark auditorium where a single candle brought light to everyone. Jesus is not an equal rival fighting darkness; he comes to show us where we are and what we need. Those who receive him and believe in his name are given the right to become children of God.

The Word became flesh, full of grace and truth (14-18)

John tells us that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, so Jesus is fully God and fully man. The image of tabernacling recalls God's promise to live with his people in the wilderness. In Exodus, Moses saw God's glory as a heart that is merciful, gracious, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. John calls that unending love grace and that faithful truth, and both came through Jesus Christ. Through the cross, God proved his love for sinners like you and me.

Apply to Life

  • Let us worship Jesus as the eternal Word and Creator God, not as a distant helper.
  • Let us walk with Jesus by getting to know him more deeply through God's Word, so that our understanding of him grows bigger.
  • Let us receive the light of Jesus and believe in his name, so that we may become children of God.
  • Let us trust the faithful love and truth of Jesus shown at the cross, a love that nothing can separate us from.
