Live Out Your Mission To Testify (Acts 3:1~4:22)

2017.04.02Stephen Cha

Jesus is the new temple, and the name of Jesus carries his authority to forgive and give eternal life, so we are called to show his work in our lives, tell others about him, and invite them to receive the gift of eternal life.

The lame man is healed in the name of Jesus (vv. 1-10)

A man lame from birth sat at the temple gate, begging for money, when Peter and John looked at him. Peter said he had no silver or gold, but he gave what he had: in the name of Jesus, rise up and walk. The healing happened right at the threshold of the temple, where people came to meet God. Through his name, the kingdom of the Messiah has broken in. The healing also points to a greater healing, for everyone born under sin and death can be raised to eternal life.

Jesus is the new temple where people meet God

In the old system, sinners met God at the temple through the sacrifice of an innocent animal. Jesus cleansed the temple and spoke of rebuilding it in three days, meaning his own body. When he died, the curtain was torn, opening the way into God's presence through the Lamb of God, the Passover lamb. Now those who come to Jesus meet God and experience forgiveness, acceptance, grace, and life. Jesus is the new temple.

Show, tell, and invite the people around you

Peter was led by the Holy Spirit to a particular person, and his love for that man moved him to get involved. He gave what he had, the gospel and the authority of Jesus Christ. Our lives are the first exhibit, displaying a person changed by Jesus. As we pray, love, and bless people over time, God can open a new chapter in their lives.

There is salvation in no other name (vv. 11-12)

Peter declares that there is salvation in no one else, for no other name under heaven has been given by which we must be saved. Other religions tell people to do what they can, but Jesus says, it is finished. Forgiveness comes from his authority, not from our persuasive words or our prayers. Our testimony is not about our past failures but about how Jesus met us, transformed us, and gave us eternal life.

Become like a child and invite others to Jesus

Peter calls his hearers to repent so that their sins may be blotted out and times of refreshing may come. A simple path is to admit that you are a sinner, believe that Jesus died in your place, and commit your life to him. Like a little child, we should pray, Jesus, use me, and expect him to open doors to our friends, family, and coworkers. So let us ask people directly, would you like to receive the gift of eternal life?

Apply to Life

  • Let us show Jesus through our changed lives, our kindness, and our prayers.
  • Let us pray for the people God has brought into our lives and bless them each day.
  • Let us tell others who Jesus is and what he has done for us, not only what we used to be.
  • Let us invite our friends to pray, to come to worship, and to receive the gift of eternal life.
  • Let us trust the name of Jesus, not our own efforts, as the power for salvation and daily life.
