Why Are You Cast Down? (Psalm 42:1~11)

2026.07.12Harold Kim시편 42:1~11

Psalm 42 gives the cast-down soul words to pray. Depression can come from the body, from spiritual dryness, or from lost community. We answer with patience and persistence, because Jesus was cast down for us.

Psalm 42 for the cast-down soul

Psalm 42 was written by the sons of Korah, not David, and it asks, "Why are you cast down, O my soul?" In 2020, about fifteen years into planting and multi-siting a church I love, I hit a wall. I lost all drive, motivation, and joy, and it lasted far too long. It was the darkest bottom of a depression I had struggled with all my life. Psalm 42 has been precious to me, and to anyone who is cast down. Today I give possible causes, and next week practical prescriptions.

Do not hyper-spiritualize: your body matters (vv. 3-10)

The first possible cause is your physical condition, which includes your temperament. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a doctor turned pastor, warned in Spiritual Depression that the physical can be partly responsible for the spiritual condition. Do not reduce depression to not praying, believing, or repenting enough. The psalmist eats his tears, lies awake on his bed, and does not seem to exercise. Jesus rose bodily, and the devil tempted him after forty days of fasting. Spurgeon suffered gout for twenty years, so take care of your body.

Spiritual COVID: when God feels absent (vv. 2-9)

The second cause is what I call spiritual COVID, like losing smell and taste. The sons of Korah have not lost faith, but they cannot sense God. They ask, "Why have you forgotten me?" Prayer feels unanswered, the Bible feels bland, and worship moves others but not you. Sin can cause depression, as Isaiah 30:13 suggests, and repentance means coming to God first with your sin, not cleaning it up beforehand. But here no sin is named. The psalmist still thirsts for God, so dryness alone can be the cause.

Communal breakdown: cut off from God's people (v. 4)

The third cause is communal breakdown. The sons of Korah once led the procession to God's house with glad shouts, but now they are alone. The missionary David Brainerd traveled, ate, slept, and ministered alone. When a Christian friend visited him for an hour or two, his diary says he found real fellowship. Elijah, after the fire on the mountain, wanted to die. God did not tell him to pray more. He gave him food, drink, sleep, and the company of an angel.

The first prescription: patience (vv. 5-11)

The psalmist says "Hope in God" more than once because healing takes time. God is doing something more loving in the waiting than a quick fix could. In 2020 I prayed for relief by morning, but he did not give it, and now I see that as his love. John Mark Comer calls hurry a violence to the soul, and Psalm 27:14 says to wait for the Lord. My counselor, Kevin Van Lant, met me for two years. He told me St. Teresa's vision of a garden of weeds: sit in the weeds and let God pull out what only he can.

The second prescription: persistence, and Jesus cast down (vv. 1-2)

The psalmist keeps panting for God even while still thirsty, and we should keep seeking him in prayer even when we feel nothing. Exercise brings no quick results, but month after month it makes us stronger, and the spiritual life works the same way. Tozer says we can never out-desire God, because he always moves first. On a hike during my sabbatical, I felt the smile of God and wept for joy. Jesus was cast down in body, spirit, and fellowship, even to death. He prayed Psalm 42 to meet us at the bottom and lift us up in his resurrection.

Apply to Life

  • Let us not reduce depression to a purely spiritual problem, and let us care for our body through food, sleep, and exercise.
  • Let us remember that dryness in prayer and a sense of God's absence can be a season and not always sin, and let us come to God first with any sin we know.
  • Let us stay close to the people of God and share our honest struggles with them.
  • Let us wait patiently on the Lord and sit with our sorrow instead of rushing past it.
  • Let us keep seeking God in prayer day after day, even when we feel nothing, and pray Psalm 42 trusting that Jesus was cast down for us.
