David, a Man After God's Own Heart (2 Sam 7:18~29)
David was a man after God's own heart because he lived before God's presence, gave thanks for God's overwhelming grace, and set his heart on God's purpose of reaching and redeeming people. Our service must flow from a living relationship with God.
Living before God's presence comes before our service (v. 18)
David went straight to the tabernacle, drew near to God's presence, and sat down, not to make a quick check-in but to spend extended time with God. The preacher warns that church activity can hide an absence of intimacy with God, as with Saul, who served as king and came to the temple yet did not truly know God. When David fled from Saul and neglected to put God first, he lost sight of God and of himself. Seeing God who sees us is the starting point for seeing ourselves, others, and the reason God placed us here.
Responding to God's promise with thankfulness
Having heard God's promise of an everlasting house, David asks, Who am I? and receives it as overwhelming grace. He remembers that he was a shepherd boy whom God chose, anointed, protected, and led through every difficulty. The preacher contrasts this with ingratitude, the habit of saying thank you quickly and then demanding more, as the people did in the wilderness. Missionary Bruce Hunt's testimony of finding a bean sprout on his rice ball in prison shows how noticing God's small gifts restores our sight of his presence.
Aligning our hearts with God's heart for people (v. 21)
David says that God has acted according to his own heart, and he recognizes that God's heart is set on people whom he pursues, redeems, and makes his own. God's greatness is not the display of power but a love that came down to rescue sinners and restore them to shine like stars. God blesses David's household so that they will be a blessing to God's people. The preacher points to a kindergarten teacher who prays for her children every day and to early student missionaries who committed to go wherever God sent them.
Apply to Life
- Let us make time to be before God in his Word and presence, seeking his face and not only serving.
- Let us practice gratitude by noticing what God has given us each day and thanking him for it.
- Let us examine whether our busy service for God flows from a living, growing relationship with him.
- Let us pray for our children and families and seek to leave a legacy of faith in the hearts of others.
- Let us be willing to go wherever God calls us, aligning our purpose with his purpose.
