Follow Me First (Luke 9:57~62)
Our church theme is "Follow Me," and Jesus calls us to follow him first. In Luke 9:57-62 we face the cost of following, the counterfeit of it, and Jesus' call with our response.
Our church theme: Follow Me First
This church has had a theme called "Follow Me." Pastor DJ preached on it earlier this year, and it would be remiss not to preach on it as well. So I have entitled this message "Follow Me First." Today we look at Luke 9:57-62 and give it our full attention. In it, three would-be followers meet Jesus along the road, and each one hears a hard word from him.
Three angles: cost, counterfeit, and call (vv. 57-62)
I will look at this packed passage from three angles, three C's. First, the cost that all three candidates face in following Jesus. Second, counterfeit Christianity. Third, the calling of Jesus Christ: his call and our response. One man says, "Let me first go and bury my father." Another says, "Let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus answers them with words about leaving the dead to bury their own dead, and about the hand on the plow and looking back.
The first candidate volunteers with zeal (vv. 57-58)
As they go along the road, someone says, "I will follow you wherever you go." He volunteers himself. He is zealous, spiritual, and determined. He wants a noble cause, a higher purpose, and a deeper meaning for his life. We might expect Jesus to welcome such enthusiasm. Instead he answers with a picture: foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
Jesus' answer: following him is not easy (vv. 57-58)
Jesus' reply amounts to this: "I don't have a permanent address. I don't have a home. Are you okay moving around all the time?" That is how he answers the first candidate's voluntary offer. I cannot think of one Christian who has walked closely with Jesus all his or her life and told me it was easier than they thought. I have never heard it from genuine, growing believers. That includes missionaries, pastors, and people who work for the glory of God. None of them has said, "Following Jesus is actually not that bad."
Apply to Life
- Let us give our full attention to Jesus' call to follow him first.
- Let us count the cost of following Jesus honestly, instead of expecting it to be easy.
- Let us test our zeal and our wish for a noble cause against Jesus' words that the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
- Let us examine ourselves so that our following is not counterfeit but a genuine response to his call.
