Freedom from the Law (Galatians 3:15-29)
God's promise to Abraham, fulfilled in Christ, cannot be annulled by the later law. The law reveals our sin and points us to Jesus, so through faith alone we become children of God and heirs of the promise.
We are hopeful because of God's promise (vv. 15-18)
God's promise to Abraham holds the power to bless, and it cannot be broken. Paul argues that this covenant was ratified long before the law came, so a later covenant cannot cancel it. The promise was unilateral, eternal, irrevocable, and unconditional, resting on God himself rather than on us. Our hope therefore rests not on our works but on the faithfulness of God, who keeps every word he speaks.
We are helpless apart from Christ, and the law shows why (vv. 19-22)
The law cannot make us right with God, but it shows us who we really are. Like a mirror, it reveals the gap between God's perfect standard and our daily failures, from misplaced priorities to hatred, lust, and coveting. The law was added because of transgressions, and it leads us to see that we cannot save ourselves. It points us to Jesus, the only one who fulfilled it perfectly.
Christ ends our captivity under the law (vv. 23-25)
Before faith came, the law functioned as a guardian, guiding us like a tutor who trains a child until maturity. Its instruction showed what we lacked, but it was never the ultimate guide. When Christ came, our sins were forgiven and we were released from the burden of performing to please God. We are no longer under the tutor's authority but are received as God's children through faith.
In Christ we are one family and heirs of the promise (vv. 26-29)
Our ethnicity, gender, and social standing remain part of who we are, but they no longer decide whether we receive God's favor. All who are baptized into Christ and clothed in him are one, and God's grace is open to all who humble themselves in faith. Those who belong to Christ are Abraham's offspring and heirs according to the promise. Faith is like grasping the hand of the Savior in deep water rather than clinging to a boulder that drags us down. The Spirit now makes us holy, something the law could never do.
Apply to Life
- Let us rest in God's promise, trusting that he keeps every word he has spoken.
- Let us stop trying to save ourselves and hold on to Christ alone.
- Let us honestly look into the mirror of the law and turn to Jesus for forgiveness.
- Let us live as children of God, free from the burden of performing for his approval.
- Let us welcome the Spirit's work to make us holy as we walk together as one in Christ.
