Lessons About Serving (Jn. 13:1~5)
We are born to serve. As children of God and servants of Christ, we serve others with the motive of serving Jesus, and in faithfulness we make Christ visible to the world.
We are children of God and servants of Christ
Being a servant is one of the most important identities of a Christian. We are children of God, and we are also servants of Christ. Many of us like to serve when we are appreciated, but we also have a hidden desire to be treated as kings. Our service shows whether we have that desire. Luke 17:10 teaches that after we have done all we were commanded, we should say that we are unworthy servants who have only done our duty. Even when we are wrinkled or have a past, God still calls us his children and his servants, and he wants to use us for his glory.
Serving others is how we serve Jesus
We cannot see Jesus, so the concrete way to honor him is to serve other people. When Jesus washed the disciples' feet and said they should wash one another's feet, he showed that serving him means serving others. Our motive for serving should not be to get something back. It should be that we are serving Jesus. Then we can serve without favoritism and without depending on how others respond. Jesus takes it personally when we serve others, just as he took the persecution of Christians personally when he spoke to Saul.
Leading is also serving under others
We often think that leading, teaching, and pastoring place us above others, but Jesus was a teacher and Lord who also served. His leading and teaching were a form of serving. The speaker shares that he was once arrogant and thought he was above others, and he began to pray, 'Lord, humble me, and do not use me above my character.' Whatever our title or position, we are still servants. This is a long journey that changes how we think, not a single moment.
Joy and faithfulness in ordinary service
Serving is often painful, but those who serve experience real joy. Matthew 25:23 connects faithful service with the joy of our Master in eternity. When we feel miserable and want to quit, we can bring our need to God every morning, because his steadfast love is new each day. We should serve where our feet are, in our families, at work, and at church, and be faithful in small things. The speaker shares that he sees stapling Sunday school materials as a privilege for the Lord, and he asks whether he will still be thankful for such work at the end of his life.
Serving makes Christ visible to others
Through our service, others can experience Christ. John 13:34-35 teaches that love is concrete and is shown in serving, and that this is how people know we are Jesus' disciples. The church is where we share the blessings we receive from Christ with one another. When we gather, meet, and sing together, we become stronger and more of Christ is shared among us. Serving one another in the body of Christ lets the world see Jesus through us, so we must go together and serve faithfully.

- Let us be faithful in our daily callings at home, at work, and at church, even in small things.
- Let us gather together in the church and share the blessings we have received from Christ with one another.
