God of All Comfort (Psa. 142:1~7)

2014.04.27Rev. Eddie Byun

In our suffering, God knows our hidden pain, cares about every concern of our hearts, hears even our silent cries, and restores what has been broken, so we can run to him as our refuge and shelter.

God knows the pain we hide (1-3)

David wrote this psalm from a cave, running for his life from Saul, and his prayer begins with the truth that God knows his way. Many of us suffer in silence, feeling that no one understands our grief, our failures, or the things we cover up. Yet God knows where we have been, what we have done, and what burdens our hearts today. Nothing in our lives is hidden from him, so we can bring everything to him honestly. You may feel alone, but you are never alone, for Jesus promised, I will be with you always.

God cares about the smallest concerns of our hearts (4)

David looks to the right and finds no one who notices him or cares for his soul. Like him, we often feel that no one notices our pain. A simple question, what are you going to wear, once reminded an elderly woman named Sue that someone still cared about her. God's care goes even further, reaching our grief, our suffering, and our anxieties. Peter tells us to cast all our anxieties on him because he cares for us. Nothing is too small to bring to the Lord.

God hears every cry of his children (5-6)

David cries out, you are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living, and asks God to listen. He admits that his enemies are too strong for him, and that honest desperation is the prayer God hears. God hears the cry of every heart, even when it comes only as a sigh with no words. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Our God is a God of compassion who weeps with those who weep.

God restores what sin and suffering have broken (7)

David asks God to bring him out of prison so that he may give thanks, though he is in a cave and not in jail. Suffering often feels like a prison, but the greatest prison is sin, and Christ has set us free from it. Our God is in the business of restoration, taking what he has made and making it new again. The cross transforms our pain, our past, and our future. He is greater than our mistakes, our present challenges, and our fears, and only he can restore.

Apply to Life

  • Let us bring every hidden pain and failure honestly before God, knowing that he already knows.
  • Let us cast all our anxieties on the Lord, because he cares for us.
  • Let us pray honest prayers of desperation, trusting that God hears even our sighs.
  • Let us run to Christ, the rock of our salvation, for our hope and strength.
  • Let us give thanks to God, who sets us free and restores our lives.
