A Christian's Commitment (Matt 7:13~29)

2018.05.27P. Stephen Cha

They must not merely hear Jesus' word and say it was nice, but obey it. Jesus calls us to choose the narrow path, to have a real relationship with him, and to build our lives on his word like the wise builder.

Jesus does not end the Sermon on the Mount with a polite wrap-up. He challenges us to make decisions and respond, to be doers and not only hearers. The preacher's eye doctor told him that neglecting his eye drops would harm his sight, and that he must do what he was told. In the same way, Jesus gives us a prescription: it is not enough to say 'I liked it' or 'that was helpful.' We must put the word to work in obedience. Jesus tells four stories to press home this one point.

Jesus says life has two paths. The wide path is popular and easy, and many who come to church follow it by thinking 'everyone else is doing it,' but it leads to destruction. The narrow path looks lonely and small, with few walking it, but it leads to life. In studies, music, and sports, people choose the narrow path of focused practice in order to become good at what they do. The most important relationship we have is with God, so Jesus invites us to follow him step by step and walk with him in obedience.

Some who come to us look like sheep but are wolves who try to draw us away from following Jesus. The preacher remembers a young adult in his ministry who received a flower from a stranger every day on her way home from the library. Over weeks the kindness drew her to a group that turned out to be a cult, and she stopped coming to church. It took many years before she got out, and she now serves as a missionary. Jesus tells us to pray that the small group leaders, pastors, and mentors we meet will help us walk in his way. We also need discernment to see that not everyone who is nice to us is someone God wants us connected to.

Two groups call Jesus 'Lord, Lord.' They have right theology, passion, and service, including Sunday school, prayer, and even miracles. Yet to one group Jesus says 'I never knew you.' Those who were rejected pointed to the things they did for God, but those Jesus commends come saying, 'You are my King, and I surrender my will to you.' Serving at church twenty hours a day cannot prepare us for the kingdom. We must come to Jesus saying, 'I cannot save myself, I need your mercy; you took my sin and paid for it on the cross.' We can tell whether we have a relationship with him by our prayer life, which shows intimacy and a desire to follow him and be like him.

The wise builder built on the rock and the foolish builder on the sand. When the storm came, the house on the rock stood and the house on the sand fell. We are all builders, and Jesus told this story to church people who hear the word every week, so some of us are wise builders and some are foolish. The wise builder struggles with the word, remembers the forgiveness and mercy Christ gave him, and chooses to forgive those who hurt him and to share even a little with the poor. The foolish builder says 'God will understand,' takes revenge, and says 'me, myself and I,' saying he will give only after he has achieved everything.

Jesus cannot force us to choose. It has to be our choice, and we must own it. Joshua, who led Israel into the promised land, was old and stood before the whole nation. He reminded them that God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt and provided manna. Yet they were still not walking with God, so he told them to choose that day whom they would serve. He declared, 'As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.' Jesus now asks us the same question: will you be the wise builder or the foolish builder?

Apply to Life
