The Promised One (Matt. 1:18~25)
Jesus is the promised son of David who is God himself, born to be the eternal King, and he came to save his people from their sins and to be God with us, drawing near to us forever.
Jesus is the promised King from David's line (18-25)
Joseph was a son of David, and Jesus was born into this family line. God had promised David that one of his sons would be a king who would reign forever, and that promise was repeated through the prophets, including Isaiah, who described this coming King as Mighty God and Everlasting Father. No good king among David's descendants could reign forever, but Jesus is God who became a baby. Though he was conceived by the Holy Spirit, he came to be born as the King who reigns forever. The birth of Christ is itself the miracle that shows who he is.
Jesus was named to save his people from their sins (21)
The name Jesus means that he would save his people, and the angel gave this as the reason for the name. People often think the world's problems come from a lack of strength, information, money, or fun, but the root problem is sin. God did not send a teacher, an entertainer, or a politician, but a Savior. Jesus lived a perfect life, gave himself as a sacrifice to pay for our sins in full, and so we are forgiven, released from God's wrath, and made righteous before him as his children forever.
Jesus is Immanuel, God who is with us (23)
The name Immanuel, meaning God with us, shows that God desires a relationship with people. Even though we rebelled and ran away, God kept pursuing us, forgiving us, and restoring our relationship with him. Jesus knows our loneliness, rejection, and betrayal because he experienced them himself, and he came to take our place. As God once dwelt in the tent at the center of Israel's camp, Jesus now comes into the hearts of those who open the door to him and lives with them forever.
Christmas is when Jesus comes into our lives
Jesus does not stay far away but comes into the hearts of those who receive him. The speaker's daughter, when she was young, prayed to receive Jesus and then felt as if she had squeezed the Jesus in her heart, showing that a child can understand this. The speaker himself came to know this as a high school senior, when a friend told him that Jesus came to die for his sin and that he could receive him. He prayed and confessed his sin, and he knew that Jesus had truly accepted him, forgiven him, and made him God's child. That is the meaning of Christmas, and it is when Christmas happened in his own life.
Apply to Life
- Let us receive Jesus into our hearts today and ask him to forgive our sins and make us his children.
- Let us remember that Jesus came to save us from sin, not merely from our circumstances, and let us confess our sins to him.
- Let us trust that God, who is with us in our loneliness, rejection, and betrayal, will never leave us.
- Let us share with our children and families the story of how Jesus came into our lives.
