Curses vs. Blessings (Gal3:10-14)

2011.06.05Rev. Eddie Byun

Curses passed down through generations are cancelled by trusting Christ, who became a curse for us on the cross. Having been freed, we believe the blessings God gives us in Christ and pass them on through our words, our prayers, and our pursuit of justice.

Cancel the curses by trusting Christ's redemption (vv. 10-13)

Every curse in our lives is cancelled when we trust in Jesus Christ. Galatians 3:10-13 shows that those who rely on works of the law are under a curse, because no one can perfectly keep everything written in the law. Christ redeemed us from that curse by becoming a curse for us on the cross, taking our sin upon himself. Many believers still live under curses spoken over them by parents or others, believing those lies instead of God's liberating word. We must take every thought captive to obey Christ and cancel those curses in Jesus' name.

Break the generational sin of apathy toward injustice

Generational sins affect us and, left unchallenged, numb us until they no longer look like sin. Apathy toward injustice is named as a generational sin the church must break, and Nehemiah 1:6 and 9:2 show leaders confessing the sins of their families and nations. God's heart for justice runs through Scripture, as Micah 6:8 shows when it asks what the Lord requires. Our legalism and our brief, transactional devotions have left us cold to the things that burn in God's heart. We must confess, repent, and pursue justice and deeper intimacy with Jesus.

Believe the blessings that are ours in Christ

Having been freed from the curse, we must believe the blessings that belong to us in Christ. Living by faith means trusting God's promises about who we are rather than our own works. Those who constantly say they are worthless, unlovable, or useless are still operating under the curse, because they do not believe what God says. You are accepted, you are God's child, and you were made on purpose for a purpose. As 1 Peter 2:9 declares, we fight the good fight of faith by pushing back darkness with praise and proclaiming God's promises.

Pass on the power of blessing through our words

Our words carry the power to bless or to curse, and we can pass that power on to the next generation. Proverbs 18:21 says death and life are in the power of the tongue, and Ephesians 4:29 calls us to speak only what builds up and gives grace to those who hear. Parents, aunts, uncles, and teachers shape the future through the love they show and the words they speak. Even those who are the first Christian in their family are called as pioneers to begin a new line of blessing. We can pray blessings into our grandchildren and the generations after them.

Apply to Life

  • Let us confess the sins of our families and nation and repent of our apathy toward injustice.
  • Let us cancel the curses spoken over us by taking every thought captive to obey Christ.
  • Let us believe the blessings of who we are in Christ and reject self-condemning thoughts.
  • Let us speak words that bless and build up those around us, especially the next generation.
  • Let us pray blessings into our future generations and trust God to build a legacy of faith.
