Convenant-Making God (2 Sam 7:1~17)
God does not need a grand house to prove anything; he chooses to dwell with his people, bless them, and establish an everlasting kingdom through David's offspring, Jesus Christ.
God does not need a palace; he comes near to walk with us (1-7)
David, living in a cedar palace, proposed building a temple for God, but God answered that he does not need a house to prove anything. Instead, God chose to bless David without a temple, because he is not confined to a building. He is holy and transcendent, yet he loves to come near and walk with his people wherever they go. Like the tent that moved with Israel, God is present in the middle of our ordinary lives. He knows what we are going through and is with us.
The God of grace who carries us from past to future (8-9)
God reminds David that he took him from the pasture, was with him in every enemy and every hardship, and made him king by grace alone. The grace that led David this far will continue to guide him into the future. God's promises to David also echo what he promised Abraham, that he would make the name great and give a land. Those who belong to Christ now share in this inheritance, a name, and a peace that no one can take away.
A forever throne promised through an offspring (11-16)
God declares that David's offspring will build a house for his name and that his throne will be established forever. This promise traces back to the seed of the woman in Genesis 3 and to the blessing given to Abraham. God also says he will be a father to this son, and when the son sins, he will discipline him, yet his steadfast love will not depart. God remains faithful even when his people are unfaithful, and he will accomplish his purpose through them.
The promise fulfilled in Jesus, the Son of David
This promise points beyond Solomon to Jesus, the greater Son of David, who became the sinless Son of God and was raised from the dead. Peter speaks of Jesus seated on David's throne forever, and his kingdom has no end. David's dynasty was never meant to last only a few years but is now joined to God's eternal kingdom. As we celebrate Christmas, we see that Jesus is the Messiah promised from Genesis 3 onward. Those who surrender their lives to him become part of that kingdom that nothing can shake.
Apply to Life
- Let us remember that God dwells with us in our everyday lives, not only in a building on Sunday.
- Let us trust God's grace that has brought us this far to guide us into the future.
- Let us receive the rest and peace that we have in Jesus Christ, and not be shaken by our enemies.
- Let us live for the eternal kingdom of Jesus rather than for making our own names great.
- Let us stay faithful to God's covenant love, which holds firm even when we fail.
