Invitations from Jejus (Mt. 11:28-30)

2018.10.07P. Stephen Cha

Jesus invites all who are weary and burdened to come to him, and growing in faith means coming to him every day through his Word and prayer.

Growth in Christ comes through God's Word and prayer

Across many surveys of churches and ministries, the most common answer to what helps people mature in Christ was the same: learning to read the Bible and learning to pray. Classes on theology, church history, and worldview are valuable, but the most important thing in the Christian life is life with Christ himself. We need a first-hand encounter with Jesus, not second-hand knowledge. Opening the Word and praying are how we meet him, hear him speak to us, and grow in him.

Jesus invites all who labor to come to him (28)

Jesus calls all who labor and are heavy laden to come to him, not only his first disciples. When they first followed him, he said, come and see, and then, come and stay with me. Here he extends the same invitation to people crushed by burdens, whether political pressure or religious duties that make them wonder what they must do to earn God's approval. He does not ask for a performance first. He says, come, and he gives rest, forgiveness, life, and mercy. Coming means bringing our brokenness and making him King over our lives.

Learn from Jesus by hearing his voice in daily quiet time (29)

Jesus also says, learn from me, and this makes our relationship with God personal. Quiet time should not be a duty we check off without remembering what we read. Instead, we start each day recognizing that Jesus is with us, then come to the Word and let him speak. As a mother recognizes her baby's cry, we learn to recognize the Lord's voice through Scripture, especially when we face decisions and do not know what to do. Writing down what Jesus is whispering to us and how to live it out helps us grow.

Walk with Jesus under his yoke through prayer (29-30)

Jesus says, take my yoke upon you. In Palestine in those days, a young ox was yoked beside a mature leader, so the burden was shared. Jesus offers to share our burden and to lead us. It is very difficult to walk with him unless we talk with him. Prayer is not only something we do but a response to what God is doing in our lives. When God speaks through the Word, we claim that promise and pray it, and we pray for the people God places on our hearts.

Apply to Life

  • Let us come to Jesus today with our burdens, shame, and guilt.
  • Let us open God's Word each day and listen for what he is whispering to us.
  • Let us take time each morning to pray and walk in step with Jesus.
  • Let us pray regularly for the people God has placed in our lives.
