Our Mighty Defender (1Sam 19:1-24)
God is our mighty defender. He delivers those who trust in him, defends those who hope in him, and dismantles those who hate him, so we can be bold for his kingdom until his assignment for our lives is complete.
God delivers through a faithful friend (vv. 1-7)
God provided Jonathan as David's friend at just the right time, knowing the road ahead would be difficult and lonely. Leadership is lonely, and an enemy makes it even lonelier, but God knows our situations and our futures. Jonathan warned David of Saul's plot, then spoke well of David to his father, reminding Saul that David had not sinned against him and had brought victory to Israel. Jonathan sought to protect David's life and also his father from further sin, speaking the truth in love. Saul swore an oath as surely as the Lord lives, but he would soon break it.
God delivers through Michael and Saul's children (vv. 8-17)
When David won again against the Philistines, success brought jealousy, and Saul tried once more to pin David to the wall with a spear. God delivered David through his wife Michael, who let him down through a window so he could escape, and then deceived Saul's men with an idol. Saul's own son and daughter became the means of David's escape, contrasting the hearts of the father and his children. David kept escaping because he continued to trust the Lord with all his heart and did not lean on his own understanding. Anointing brings opposition, but God delivers those who trust in him.
God defends those who hope in him (vv. 18-22)
David fled to Samuel at Ramah and went to Naioth, choosing a spiritual refuge rather than returning home, even though he now had complete freedom. When Saul's men came to capture him, the Spirit of God came upon them and they prophesied, and this happened three times. God defended David through his own Spirit. In the same time of danger, David wrote Psalm 59 and sang of God's love in the morning instead of worrying. When we sing through pain, our faith is purified instead of poisoned.
God dismantles those who hate him (vv. 23-24)
Saul was stripped of his royal robes and lay down all day and night prophesying before Samuel. Clothes represent office and position, and Saul had already been rejected by God as king. God honors those who honor him and dishonors those who hate his anointed servant. We can humble ourselves before God now, or God will humble us later, either in shame or in hell. Those who trust the Lord will receive help and honor from him.
You are unstoppable until God's assignment is complete
Goliath could not kill David, and Saul could not kill him, because God's work in his life was not yet finished. God determines our last day and defends us through every attack until his purpose for us is complete. Even when we face suffering as a test of faith, a crown of life awaits those who remain faithful. Therefore we can be bold and strong and take risks for his kingdom, knowing we are safe under his mighty wings.
Apply to Life
- Let us trust the Lord when new challenges come, knowing they are part of his preparing us for greater service.
- Let us sing of the Lord's love and focus on his greatness when we are in pain, not only on our problems.
- Let us seek the presence of God as our true rest and refuge.
- Let us humble ourselves before God now rather than wait for him to humble us.
- Let us walk in the will of God, for that is the safest place in the world.
