Love Them Through Intercession (2 Cor10:1-6)
Because our fight against unbelief is spiritual rather than physical, we love our unsaved loved ones by interceding for them, pulling down the enemy's strongholds, and declaring their freedom in Christ.
Our fight is spiritual, not physical (3-4)
Our fight is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces. Paul says that though we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh. Every conflict we face, whether with someone who has wronged us or with someone who does not know Christ, has a spiritual dimension. We must see the cause before we can find the cure, so we must treat these battles as spiritual warfare and not merely as personal or political problems.
The cause of unbelief is spiritual blindness
The ultimate cause of people not coming to Christ is spiritual blindness, because the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers. It is not finally an intellectual, cultural, or moral barrier. Salvation is by God's grace alone, yet we play a role in helping people see the light of the gospel. We were once blind ourselves. Because the cause is blindness, the cure must address that blindness, and we must never forget the grace that opened our eyes.
Our weapons have divine power to pull down strongholds (4)
Our weapons are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. Our power does not come from physical strength, sleep, or food, but from God alone. Every child of God is also a soldier in God's army, and no soldier may be absent without leave. The word translated destroy means to pull down, so whatever the enemy raises up to block people from God can be torn down. Our prayers, infused with God's promises, will set people free.
Take every thought captive to obey Christ (5)
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. This phrase is often applied to our own thoughts, but its context concerns the thinking of others, the spiritual control the enemy holds over those who do not yet see the light. Through prayer we declare in faith the destruction of the veil over their minds. God has set us free from guilt and condemnation, and we can proclaim that freedom to others.
Pray for the unsaved in five steps
Pray for your unbelieving loved ones in five steps. Acknowledge your status as a child of God and a warrior in His army. Bind the enemy in Jesus' name. Cancel every assignment of the enemy over their lives. Declare their freedom in faith. Then evangelize them, or encourage them to come on Resurrection Sunday. These prayers prepare the way for them to see, and they fight for those who cannot yet fight for themselves.
Apply to Life
- Let us not be casual bystanders but active in the fight on behalf of our loved ones.
- Let us acknowledge our status as children of God and soldiers in His army before we pray.
- Let us bind the enemy and cancel his assignments over the lives of those who do not yet know Christ.
- Let us declare the freedom of our unbelieving loved ones in faith.
- Let us take our place on the front lines, on our knees, and learn to fight in prayer.
