Seven Days Till Salvation (Mar. 11:1-11)

2013.03.24Rev. Eddie Byun

Seven Days Till Salvation's core message: Jesus' final week before the cross is remembered day by day, and each day calls us to honor Christ through prayer, surrender, service, and cross-centered faith until we celebrate the resurrection.

Jesus is celebrated as the coming Messiah, so we cry out, Save us (1-11)

Palm Sunday marks Jesus riding a colt into Jerusalem as the crowds shouted Hosanna, a praise and a prayer meaning save us now. The people waved palm branches, a national symbol of righteousness, hope, and victory, yet they expected a political Messiah. Today we celebrate Christ as King and cry out for the salvation of our loved ones, our parents, siblings, and cousins, who do not yet know Christ. Only Jesus can save them, so we pray Hosanna and trust God's sovereignty.

Jesus cleanses the temple, so we pray for true worship among all nations

On Monday Jesus drove out those who bought and sold in the temple because the outer courts, meant for Gentile worshippers, had become a market that distracted from prayer. God's desire is a house of prayer for all nations. Jesus was cleaning house in preparation for himself as the true temple, and Paul teaches that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. So we pray for the Spirit to clear out whatever hinders true worship in our hearts, and we pray that the nations may know Jesus this weekend.

Jesus is challenged, so we examine how we have betrayed him

On Tuesday the religious leaders challenged Jesus, asking by what authority he acted, and Judas agreed to betray him for money. Satan entered Judas and began a murderous rebellion. Who do we say Jesus is, and is he truly Lord over every area of our lives? We have all betrayed Jesus through our rebellion and sin, and that sin is the reason he walks the path toward Golgotha. So we come humbly and honestly before Jesus and examine how we have challenged his lordship.

Jesus prays and wrestles, so we pray to forgive those who hurt us

Wednesday is not recorded in Scripture, but Jesus likely spent the day alone in deep prayer and wrestling, learning to love, forgive, and serve the one who had just betrayed him. Just as Jesus wrestled, we should wrestle in prayer so that we may love, bless, serve, and forgive those who have hurt us and betrayed us. Forgiving our enemies is a good way to honor Christ this week.

Jesus demonstrates true discipleship through the Passover, service, and surrender (Mark 14:12-36; John 13:5; Philippians 2:5-8)

On Thursday Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper in the setting of the Passover, reminding us that only through the shed blood of the Lamb are we saved and delivered from the spirit of death. He washed his disciples' feet, showing that true discipleship is a life of servanthood. In Gethsemane he prayed, not my will but yours be done, which is the beginning of discipleship. Whenever God asks us to surrender something, he is making room in our hearts for something better. So we take up the towel, serve the body of Christ, and surrender our will to the Father.

Jesus is disowned, dies, and rises, so we fall, get up, and return to the cross (Mark 14:66-72; Mark 15:37-38)

On Friday Peter denied Jesus three times, and Jesus, who knows betrayal, suffered with us and for us. When Peter fell, he wept, and like the old monk who falls down, gets up, and returns to the cross, we too fail again and again. Jesus died, and the curtain of the temple was torn from top to bottom, showing that God himself tore down the wall that separated us from his presence. That is why we call this day good. Saturday was the day of rest, and on Resurrection Sunday, the greatest day in all of creation, sin and death are defeated and eternal life is ours.
