Conclusion to Sonburn: From Ruin to Restoration (Nehemiah 8:1~6)
When God's word returns to center stage, it convicts, gives life from death, and shapes us. Every page of the Old Testament drives us to Jesus, whose love makes our hearts burn.
Restoration begins when the Word returns (vv. 1-6)
Ezra and Nehemiah belong together as one book. God brought his people back to Jerusalem around 445 BC after exile for centuries of unrepentant idolatry, and they rebuilt the temple and the walls. In Nehemiah 8, the people gather at the Water Gate, and Ezra opens the law of Moses before all of them. The people stand, say 'Amen, Amen,' lift their hands, and bow with faces to the ground. Spiritual restoration, and so total restoration, starts with the Word put back at the center and with how it works wonders.
The Word convicts, and its grief turns to joy
Conviction is different from preference: a preference can be put down, but the Word grips you and does not let go. Ezra read for six hours, and the people's ears stayed attentive. The Word is personal and global, speaking to 32 or 33 nations in one room. In Nehemiah 8:9-12 the people weep, as in the Pyongyang revival, where confessing sins came before joy. Holy Spirit grief over sin is the mourning Jesus said will be comforted, and the joy of the Lord becomes our strength.
The Word brings life out of death
God created everything out of nothing by speaking in Genesis 1. Elisha had to pace, wait, and pray, and his first attempt failed to raise a dead child in 2 Kings 4. Jesus simply said, 'Lazarus, come out.' In the fall of 2024, a vivid dream of dead, dry bones in a valley, from Ezekiel 37, came to me as God told me to go preach. People now say they see what they never saw and feel a strange attraction to God. That is the Word bringing life out of death.
The Word shapes us unlike the world
The constant threat to God's people is being shaped more by the world than by the Word, and those most confident are often the most prone to it. James 1:26-27 gives a test: social compassion for orphans and widows, and personal purity, with a bridled tongue. The world pits public justice against personal morality. If the Word shapes you, you will not fit any political party, identity camp, or demographic. You will hold together what the world separates.
Prepare, pray, and obey every part
Preachers prepare through years of study, sweat, panic, and prayer, so listeners should prepare too. Arrive early and prayerfully, since the singing is part of worship that God commands, not a warm-up. Recording sermons in COVID with no praise, prayer, or people was cold, while now I pray with the intercessory team before each service. Also listen to obey, as James 1:22 says. Honest effort to obey every command shows we fail and need the gospel.
Every page leads to Jesus, and hearts burn
Nehemiah 9:30-33 retraces Israel's history with two themes: our sin is great, and God's steadfast love is greater still. God would not give up on his people, and he gave up his own Son. Genesis to Nehemiah, Jesus is the second Adam, the greater Moses and Joshua, the perfect judge, the king greater than David, and the exiled one who becomes the true temple. You need Jesus more than inspiration or advice. As on the Emmaus road in Luke 24:31-32, hearts burn when he opens the Scriptures, and 1 John 5:2-3 says love shows in obedience.
Apply to Life
- Let us put God's word back at the center of our lives and listen to it with undivided attention.
- Let us confess our sins honestly when the Word convicts us, and receive the joy of the Lord as our strength.
- Let us arrive early and prayerfully for worship, and treat the singing as part of worship.
- Let us listen to obey every part of God's word, and run to the gospel when we see we fall short.
- Let us look for Jesus in every passage and love God and all peoples as he loves us.
