Your Worst Investment Mistakes (Mat. 25:14~30)
God is not a hard master to be feared but a generous Lord who has entrusted us with much and invites us to invest our lives in His kingdom and joy. The servant who buried his talent misread his Master's heart, forgot his calling, and missed the reward awaiting faithful servants.
Misreading the Master's heart leads to fear (vv. 24-25)
The servant with one talent saw his master as a hard man who reaps where he did not sow, so he was afraid and hid what he had received. The other two servants went out at once with eagerness, because they knew their master and were grateful for the chance to serve him. Our view of God's character shapes how we respond when ministry becomes heavy and our eyes narrow to our own burdens. When we forget that God is with us and invites us to share his work, we see only demands and not his presence and love. We should first ask honestly how we see God.
Forgetting our calling as servants
This servant not only misjudged the master but also forgot his assignment. The talent was given to be put to work in the master's business while he was away. The word for servant is closer to slave, someone who has no right to decide for himself how to live. Instead of living for the master, this servant acted as if he were his own master. Our lives belong to God, and he has the say over how we live and serve.
What we have been given is far more than little
The servant compared his one talent with the five and two talents given to others and judged the arrangement unfair. But a talent was a monetary unit, and one talent equaled about 6,000 denarii, roughly twenty years of wages. Even a single talent was a great sum, not something small to bury. In Jesus Christ, God has given each of us tremendous riches so that we can invest them in furthering his kingdom. The one who thinks he has nothing to offer forgets how much has been entrusted to him.
Forgetting the day of reckoning and the Master's joy (vv. 21, 23)
The third mistake was forgetting that a day of accounting was coming. The faithful servants heard, Well done, good and faithful servant, and were invited to enter into their master's joy. The speaker recalled an oral exam in seminary where he struggled under his professor's questions and imagined the Lord asking him what he had done with what he was given. The reward is not merely comfort but greater responsibility and the Master's joy. That joy grows as people come to know Jesus and as the gospel spreads through us.
Apply to Life
- Let us examine how we see God and ask whether fear or trust shapes our service.
- Let us remember that our lives and gifts belong to God and live as faithful servants.
- Let us recognize the great riches God has given us in Christ and invest them in his kingdom.
- Let us serve with eagerness now, keeping in mind the day of reckoning and the joy of our Master.
