Book of Life (Rev. 20:11~15)

Everything is at stake for eternity. God is all everything, we will be judged by our books because of sin, and only our name in the Lamb's book of life changes everything.

Eternity is at stake, not another exam

Korea loves exams: university, jobs and promotions all sit behind tests, and some people put their lives on hold to study for them. We can treat life, and even our spiritual life, as a series of exams to pass. Do we study to learn and grow, or only to pass the next hurdle? We must reflect on how we treat God, His Word and salvation, because eternity is at stake: eternal life with God or eternal death without Him. Jesus commands in Mark 16:15-16 that we proclaim the gospel, and whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.

God is all everything (11절)

A throne signifies absolute power and authority, yet today only 11 countries have absolute monarchies. Most of us find absolute power, all-knowing and all-seeing alien, even negative. Yet the Bible teaches that God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, eternal, unchanging, love, mercy, truth, righteous and just. God does not merely have power. He is power, the creator, all knowledge and all holiness. When a Jehovah's Witness asked how God can be everywhere at once, the answer was simply, "Because it's God." Otherwise He would not be God.

His absolute power is intimate and personal

Psalm 139:1-12 shows King David, himself a monarch, describing God's sovereignty. God knows when we sit and stand, goes before and behind us, and we cannot escape His presence, even in darkness. This fills us with peace, not dread. God created us to live with Him in loving union. That is why His righteousness, justice and even wrath guarantee His love, since without perfect holiness sin would remain. Sin, a very small word, ruins that original unity, so it must be dealt with and all creation held to account.

We will be judged by our books (12-13절)

The dead, great and small, stand before the throne, and books are opened. Everyone is judged, rich or poor, believer or unbeliever, each according to what they have done. God is not an angry headmaster or a talent-show judge. Psalm 139:13-18 shows that He knew us before our days, formed us in the womb and regards us as delicate and precious. Like Icarus before the sun, sin in God's presence is judged and extinguished, because it contradicts all that God is. Books mean accounts: our finite lives are brought to account before the perfect Creator, not because God is a stickler for rules but out of love. Sin came through Adam (Romans 5:12), and death spread to all.

The Lamb's book of life changes everything (14-15절)

Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire, which is eternal separation and rejection from God. David, in Psalm 139:19-24, hates sin and asks God to search him and lead him in the way of everlasting life. In Gethsemane (Luke 22:42-44) Jesus prayed that the cup pass from Him. It was not the physical pain or the shame, but being forsaken by God as He bore the world's sin. Revelation 13:8 gives the full title: the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. When we give our lives to the One who gave His life for us, He writes our name there. That one name reconciles everything else in our books and turns everlasting death into everlasting life.

Apply to Life
