The Way of Grace (1sam 29:30)

2009.12.13Rev. Eddie Byun

God steps in when we cannot win, strengthens us from within, and saves us so that we may share his grace with others. Those who know grace show it through gratitude and generosity, because everything in life is gift.

God steps in when we cannot win (vv. 1-7)

David is in a no-win situation. Marching at the rear with the Philistines, he must either fight his own people or turn on an army far larger than his own. God steps in, moving the Philistine commanders to send him away in peace. This is the gospel pattern. Sin binds us, and we cannot win against it, as Paul shows in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, where some who were once bound by sin were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our chains fall off when we surrender to Jesus, who is stronger than sin and death.

God strengthens us from within (vv. 6-8)

When Saul was in distress, he turned to a medium because God had turned away from him. David, in similar distress, turned to the Lord through the priest Abiathar and the ephod, and he inquired of the Lord. The difference shows where real strength comes from. Psalm 62 declares that the soul finds rest in God alone. This strength does not come from our own effort but from kneeling before God, holding on to his Word, and trusting in his promises. Distance from God can destroy us, while seeking him strengthens us.

God saves so that we may share grace (vv. 11-15, 21-25)

David's men found an Egyptian left to die in a field, and they gave him water and food. That act of grace led them to the Amalekite raiders, and God restored everything they had lost, including David's two wives. When some men wanted to keep the plunder from the two hundred who stayed behind, David refused. He told them that everything is the Lord's gift and the victory is his. Salvation is never meant to be solitary. God saves us by grace so that we might share that grace with others.

Grace shows itself in gratitude and generosity (vv. 25-31)

Those who know grace are thankful and generous. David shared the plunder with the cities and elders who had been part of his journey, while Saul had taken from his people. Everything in our lives is grace, including our ability to work, the breath we breathe, and the ordinary gifts we often overlook. Even a baby's cry is grace, because it shows that her lungs are healthy and strong. Seeing all of life as grace changes how we give to others. The desert years are not wasted when we learn to trust the Lord and walk in his grace.

Apply to Life

  • Let us bring our struggles and sins to the cross of Jesus and let him step in when we cannot win.
  • Let us seek the Lord daily in prayer and in his Word, and not turn to other sources for strength.
  • Let us thank God for everything in our lives as grace, including the ordinary gifts we tend to overlook.
  • Let us extend grace and generosity to those in need, just as God has shown grace to us.
  • Let us share what we have received from God with those around us instead of keeping it for ourselves.
