Disciple-Making Church (Matt 28:18~20)

2017.09.10P. Stephen Cha

Jesus commissions the church to make disciples, and that means being a community that witnesses to Jesus, helping one another to obey him, and going out with his authority to bless the people around us.

We belong to a community that keeps witnessing to Christ (vv. 19)

Baptism publicly declares that Jesus died for our sins, that we belong to him, and that we will live following him. Through Romans 6, the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Christ, making us one with him in his death and resurrection and joining us to his people. God does not intend us to walk alone. He brings us into one body, where we pray for one another, encourage one another, and bless one another. Like a drag net, the work of reaching people is shared by the whole church, and together we keep bringing people to Christ.

We help one another obey Christ and grow into his likeness (vv. 20)

The command is not only to obey but to teach others to obey. We cannot go far in the spiritual life if we do not let Jesus lead, keep in step with him, and say yes to what he invites us to do and no to what we want or what the world says. Those who help others follow Jesus are usually growing themselves. How do we help others love God? By first setting our own lives as examples and inviting others in. The goal is not to be busy with many things but to become more like Christ as he continues to shape us.

Go with Jesus' authority into the everyday places God has placed us

Jesus says go because many people will not come to us. He holds all authority in heaven and on earth, and he is already at work in places we have never been. We can begin with the people we meet each week, such as coworkers, the security guard, and the parents of our children's friends. We can greet them, pray for them, show God's kindness, and offer to serve them. Being the first to speak words of hope is a way to become a channel of God's blessing. When we open our mouths to speak of Jesus, we will experience his presence with us.

Apply to Life

  • Let us belong to a community of faith by signing up for a small group and praying with and encouraging one another.
  • Let us be a church that obeys God, saying yes to the Lord and keeping in step with him.
  • Let us set our lives as examples and invite others to follow Jesus with us.
  • Let us go to the people around us in our daily lives, greet them first, and pray for them.
  • Let us open our mouths to speak about Jesus, trusting that he will be with us and give us words to say.
