Rejoicing because God Restores (1Sam 1:20-2:11)
God restores dignity and lives, and the proper response to his restoring grace is joyful rejoicing and gladly returning our lives to him. Hannah's joy rested in the Lord rather than in the gift, and she trained her son to worship God.
God restores dignity through the birth of a son (1:20)
Hannah had lived for years in barrenness, shame, and the taunts of her rival Peninnah. When God gave her a son, her dignity was restored and her season of disgrace came to an end. The name Samuel means 'God hears,' a reminder that the Lord had listened to her cry. God's restoring work begins by lifting up those who have been despised and made to feel cursed.
Gladly returning the gift to the Giver (1:21-28)
When the family went up to Shiloh for the annual sacrifice, Hannah stayed home and did not delay her promise. She was preparing Samuel to depend less on her and more on God during the weaning. After he was weaned, she brought the boy to Shiloh with a bull, flour, and wine. She returned the child she had longed for to the Lord who had given him.
Raising children to become worshipers of God (2:11)
Hannah was raising her son to be a worshiper, and by the age of three Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest. Discipleship happens when those under our care become worshipers of God. Parents must teach their children from the start to trust a Father in heaven who is stronger and more trustworthy than any earthly father. Family discipleship is where the church begins.
Hannah rejoices in the Lord, not in the gift (2:1-10)
Hannah's song begins with 'My heart rejoices in the Lord,' and her joy rests on the Giver rather than the gift. She confesses that there is no one holy like the Lord and no rock like our God. She trusts that the Lord knows every wrong done to her and will deal with her enemies in due time, so she does not seek revenge. He is sovereign over life and death, poverty and wealth, humbling the proud and lifting the humble.
Restored in Christ, we give ourselves back to God
God restores our dignity through his Son, Jesus Christ, who changes our shame into dignity and clothes us with righteousness. Since everything we have is grace, Paul urges us in Romans 12:1 to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. Ephesians 1:3-4 reminds us that God chose us in love before the creation of the world. Remembering his mercy and might leads us to rejoice and to trust him as our defender.
Apply to Life
- Let us raise our children and those under our care to trust and worship the Lord.
- Let us begin family devotions by memorizing verses together, reading the day's text, and praying for one another.
- Let us gladly return to God the gifts he has given us, including our time, abilities, and lives.
- Let us rejoice in the Lord rather than in his gifts, remembering that he is our defender.
- Let us leave room for God's wrath and not seek revenge against those who wrong us.
