Movement of God's Word in Your Life (Psa. 1:1~6)

2015.08.30Stephen Cha

God's word moves in our lives in three directions: upward as we hear and obey Him, inward as we treasure it in our hearts, and outward as it bears fruit that others can see. Blessing comes to the one who walks with God in this way.

Hearing God's whisper and walking in obedience (1절)

Psalm 1 begins by describing a blessed person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, and the movement of God's word starts with listening. Are you hearing God speak to you well in your quiet time? Often He is whispering something about your life, and if something blocks your hearing, you need to deal with it. The Bible is not mainly about becoming a moral person but about walking closely with God. Hearing must lead to action, so look back over this past year and ask whether God has led you to stop something or to start something new in obedience.

Treasuring God's word deep in the heart (2절)

Verse 2 says the blessed person delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. God's word moves from the mind into the heart as we meditate on it, memorize it, and think about what God is saying to us. When I was a college student working a long summer job, I memorized scripture during my drives and breaks, and those verses came back to me in hard times. When we hold God's word as a treasure, it carries us through confusion and reminds us of His faithfulness. The question is not how much Bible knowledge you have, but how much of God's word saturates your heart.

Bearing fruit that blesses others (3절)

Verse 3 compares the blessed person to a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. God wants His word to change us into the likeness of Jesus, so that patience, faithfulness, and love grow in our relationships. Ask yourself what season you are in, whether you are still receiving or whether God is calling you to serve, such as leading a small group. Fruit also appears in difficult seasons, as we see in people at a Christian recovery conference who found freedom in Christ and shared their testimony boldly. Let your life speak of Jesus to others.

Apply to Life

  • Let us examine whether we are hearing God's whisper clearly in our quiet time and obeying what He is telling us to do.
  • Let us treasure God's word in our hearts through meditation and memorization so it can guide us in every season.
  • Let us ask God which season of life we are in and step up to serve others with the gifts He has given us.
  • Let us set aside a regular time each morning or evening for our quiet time and make it a true investment.
  • Let us join a small group so that we can help one another grow through what God is doing in our lives.
