The Good News: Our God Reigns (Psalm 46:1-11)

2009.04.26Rev. 에디 변

Even when the world seems to be spinning out of control, our God still reigns and is in control. Because he is our refuge, our strength, and our fortress, we can trust his presence and protection and live without fear.

Even when the world seems out of control, our God reigns

The headlines of just one day, from North Korean missile threats and pirate hostage takeovers to a deadly flu and new attacks in Baghdad, make the world look like it is spinning out of control. But our good news is this: God is the author of all life, he is in control, and our God reigns. No matter what the newspapers say or what your life situation is, he is still good, still strong, and still loves you. So when the world looks like chaos, we need to look to him.

We can trust in God's presence in every storm (1-3)

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble, and he has promised never to leave or forsake his people. He showed his presence in the wilderness through a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, and in the new covenant he lives within us through the Holy Spirit, the seal of our redemption. Like a child carried to bed in his father's arms, we are carried by him when we cannot go on. Even if the earth gives way, nothing, not even death, can separate us from his love.

God's protection reaches beyond every nation and enemy (4-7)

Nations may be in uproar and kingdoms may fall, yet when God lifts his voice the earth melts before him, because there is no nation or political power where he does not reign. The Lord Almighty, the Most High, is with us, and all power originates from him. Though we may face danger, he protects his people, and the city of God awaits us as our secure home. Greater is he who is in us than he who is in the world.

Fearing no one, we can face even death with joy

Jesus told us not to fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul, and Paul assured us that nothing can separate us from God's love. The missionaries John and Betty Stamm walked to their execution in China with joy because they knew they were about to see Christ. For believers, the best is yet to come, not next year but forever. Life only gets better in Christ, and each day brings us closer to seeing the face of God.

Apply to Life

  • Let us run to God in every storm, trusting his presence rather than looking elsewhere for shelter.
  • Let us remember that God reigns over every nation and power, and not let the headlines drive us into fear.
  • Let us bind the voice of the enemy and surrender our lives to God's will alone.
  • Let us live without fear, knowing that the best is yet to come.
