Stop Abusing His Name (Exodus 20:7)
God reveals his name so that we may know him personally, so we must not abuse it through empty or profane words and broken promises. Since we carry his name wherever we go, we honor it through worship, witness, and a life lived in the name of Jesus.
God reveals his name so that we may know him personally
God reveals his name so that we may know him personally. A name carries identity and closeness, and when God told Moses, I am who I am, he showed a character that can never be exhausted, from power and healing to all-knowing. Jesus later makes the same claim when he says, I am. God's name is not a distant title but an invitation into a relationship of trust and love, and he wants to be personal with you and with me.
Using God's name in vain is abusing it (vv. 7)
To take God's name in vain is to use it without real significance, which means treating it as worthless. Cursing, using God's name as an empty expression, or substituting it for oh my goodness misrepresents his character. Broken promises do the same, because an oath made before God is a serious matter. We bear his name wherever we go, so we must not profane it or damage his reputation.
Honoring God's name by enhancing his reputation
The third commandment also has a positive side, which is honoring God's name by enhancing his reputation. We do this through worship, where God's people gather together to magnify the Lord and exalt his name, as Psalm 34:3 calls us to do. We also bear witness to Jesus, because there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved, as Acts 4:12 tells us. Our daily lives, in word and deed, should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as Colossians 3:17 says.
Apply to Life
- Let us examine whether God is honored in our worship when we gather together.
- Let us bear witness to the name of Jesus, the only name by which we are saved.
- Let us not misrepresent God through profane words, empty expressions, or broken promises.
- Let us do our work, studies, and housework in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- Let us live out the third commandment by honoring God's name in our lifestyle every day.
