The Favor of God (2 Sam 5:1-25)

2012.04.29Rev. Eddie Byun

God's favor comes to believers in three forms: position, power, and presence. Through faith in Christ we are made royalty and given access to God's power and intimate presence.

God's favor is seen in David's royal position (1-5)

God's favor came upon David in the form of position. When the tribes of Israel came to Hebron, they gave three reasons for making him king: he was their family, he had proven faithful in battle, and they saw God's calling on his life. These are three marks to look for in choosing leaders. David was anointed king at thirty, but only after years of waiting, running for his life, and hiding in caves. God's promise was fulfilled in his time, which shows that trusting through a long season of waiting is itself a sign of God's favor.

Faith in Christ makes us royalty before God

The favor of God also makes us royalty in Christ. Because faith in Christ brings favor, believers are elevated to a position of sonship and kingship before the Lord. Ephesians 2 says God has seated us with Christ in the heavenly places, and 1 Peter 2:9-10 calls us a chosen race, a royal priesthood, and a people for God's own possession. Our surroundings and our feelings do not determine our status. Our calling, our identity, and our adoption through Christ do, so we must not dishonor our position with false humility.

God's power enables us to overcome and to serve (6-12)

The favor of God also comes in the form of power. David captured Jerusalem, a city mentioned more than 700 times in the Bible, and he did it not by his own might but by God's favor and power. The Jebusites mocked him, saying even the blind and the lame could defend the city, but David took the stronghold. He recognized that the Lord had established his kingdom for the sake of his people. This power is available to us through the Holy Spirit and the name of Jesus, who came to gather the weak, the blind, and the lame.

Intimacy with God guides and rewards us (17-25)

The favor of God comes in the form of presence. When the Philistines attacked again, David inquired of the Lord and received a different instruction than before. God did not repeat the same method, because he desires a relationship with his people rather than rules and ritual. Instruction comes from intimacy with the Lord, and intimacy with Christ is itself the reward. Since the Holy Spirit already dwells in believers, our task is not to bring God's presence into our lives but to acknowledge, honor, and follow him.

Apply to Life

  • Let us trust God's promises by faith, even when the season of waiting is long.
  • Let us remember that we are royalty in Christ and refuse false humility that dishonors our position.
  • Let us rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to the ends of the earth.
  • Let us draw near to God in intimacy, follow his leading, and honor the Holy Spirit.
