An Army and a Family (2 Sam10:1-19)
God's people are called to be both an army and a family: sheltering and restoring one another in love, strengthening each other with courage, and standing together to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
Shelter and restore the saints in love (1-5)
David shows kindness to Hanun, the new king of the Ammonites, by sending comforters after his father's death. Hanun's princes distrust David, and Hanun humiliates David's men by shaving half their beards and cutting their garments at the hips. Rather than rebuking his men for their failure, David tells them to wait in Jericho until their beards grow back, sheltering them in their shame. Love always protects. God heals his people through the comfort of the Holy Spirit and through the community of faith, so we must protect one another's dignity, especially by never publicly exposing the failures of others.](null)
Strengthen the saints with courageous encouragement (6-12)
Surrounded by enemies on both the front and the rear, Joab divides his best men and places his brother Abishai in command of the rest. Before the battle he says, 'Be of good courage,' and he leaves the outcome to the Lord, not knowing whether they will win or lose. To encourage means to infuse courage and strength into another person, because the enemy is trying to drain courage from God's people. God repeatedly tells his people to be strong and courageous and not to fear, because he is with them. A faith that trusts God's sovereignty can take risks and is not ruled by fear, even in the face of death.
Stand with the saints and fight together (13)
After the battle, the Syrians who had been hired to save the Ammonites were too afraid to help them any longer, but our Savior has no fear. As an army and a family, we stand with one another and fight for the things of God's heart. Joab's words to Abishai, 'I've got your back,' show what this looks like in the church. Whether we are here for one year or for a lifetime, we are to commit fully to the work God gives us and say, 'Let's do this.' We are also called to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, including the victims of human trafficking.
Apply to Life
- Let us protect one another's dignity by correcting one another in private and never shaming a brother or sister in public.
- Let us honor the people who have blessed and shaped our spiritual journey by reaching out to them this year.
- Let us encourage one another with words of courage and remind each other that the Lord is with us.
- Let us stand with one another and say 'Let's do this' as we serve the church, the city, and the nations.
- Let us pray for and act on behalf of those trapped in human trafficking, the fatherless, and the widow.
