The Sound of Music in Worship (Psalm 33:1~5)
Christian worship is musical for four reasons: the psalmist calls for it, music is memorable and powerful, it is a gift from God that points back to him, and it is redemptive through Jesus.
Why is Christian worship musical?
We have been going through the Psalms over the summer. Psalm 33 helps answer a question that outsiders often ask: why does Christian worship involve singing, instruments, choirs and even body movements? The Bible commands loud shouts of joy, clapping, lifting hands, standing and dancing. The psalms are not only prayers but poetic pieces set to music. Today we look at four reasons for music in worship.
The psalmist calls us to music for God's pleasure and ours (1-3절)
Psalm 33 is full of action verbs: shout, give thanks, make melody, sing, play. At creation God said "it is good" over each day and "very good" over all of it, taking infinite pleasure in his works. We glorify God most by enjoying him and his good gifts, as a chef is honored when guests savor the food and not when they barely get through it. Psalm 95 gives endless reasons to sing: the Lord is a great God and a great King. Many picture God as scowling and quick to anger, but the gospel shows him as the happiest person, who wants to share his pleasure with us through worship.
Music is memorable and powerful
The popularity of Korean culture today owes much to its music. The Sound of Music is unforgettable because of its songs, such as "The Hills Are Alive" and "Edelweiss." Try watching a great film on mute and it turns boring. In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy plays Mozart over the prison speakers. God created music and all its transcendent beauty. So why would the original creator not use it to make himself most memorable in worship?
Music is God's gift and great music points to him (3절)
In Matthew 5:44-45 Jesus says God sends sun and rain on the just and the unjust. He likewise gives all the arts, creativity and music freely to everyone. We are tempted to idolize gifted people. But taking the glory that belongs to the source of our talents is cosmic plagiarism, and worship is cosmic restoration. Great music has order, movement, purpose and climax, and Leonard Bernstein said Beethoven's pieces have a "rightness" that suggests something trustworthy behind them. That is why verse 3 says to play skillfully with loud shouts. Isaiah 29:13 warns that God is not pleased by lip service, but by sincerity together with skill.
Music and singing in worship are redemptive
Beliefs alone do not save or change us. In James 2 the demons believe and tremble, yet have no love, praise or joy. After praying and obeying, singing is the thing mentioned most in the Psalms. In Ephesians 5:18-19, being filled with the Spirit shows itself in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. John Calvin said singing fixes our attention on God and raises our affections. The Spirit uses it to make Jesus palpable, so that we worship him above all else.
Jesus makes our poor worship pleasing and leads the eternal choir
Jesus came to cover my poor singing along with my sinning, and to make my worship pleasing to God. Hebrews 2:12-13 shows Jesus singing praise in the midst of the congregation. He will lead a chorus from every tongue, tribe and nation forever. For those who enjoy worshiping God heaven will be heaven, but for those who do not it will not. Jesus, who made all things, suffered to the point of death on a cross. He did this to sanctify us, cleanse us from sin and call us brothers and sisters, so that we could join the eternal choir.
Apply to Life
- Let us worship God with joy, enjoying him and his good gifts instead of merely getting through the service.
- Let us sing, shout, clap and lift our hands with sincerity and skill, putting our whole heart and body into worship.
- Let us give God the glory for every creative talent and not take it for ourselves.
- Let us not stop at belief, but praise God with all our heart and let the Spirit fill us as we sing.
- Let us believe and follow Jesus, so that we may join the eternal heavenly choir he leads.
