The Mystery of Christmas Revealed (John 1:14)

2015.12.20Stephen Cha

The Word became flesh, so the Creator God came as a baby to dwell among us as Emmanuel, and he revealed his glory most fully when he died on the cross for our sins.

The Creator God became a human baby (v. 14)

Christmas is not only a sweet baby in a manger, because the baby is the Creator God. Before he was born in Bethlehem, Jesus was the Logos, who was with God in the beginning, was God himself, and through whom all things came into existence. C.S. Lewis called the incarnation the central miracle, the one that makes the resurrection and the cross possible. God became a human being so that he could take our place and bear our sins as our substitute.

God came to live with us as Emmanuel

The Word dwelt among us, and the original word means that he pitched a tent and moved in right next to us. In the Old Testament, God dwelt with his people in the tabernacle, where they came to him in confusion and brokenness and received forgiveness through sacrifices. Jesus is Emmanuel, which means God with us. He walks with us, helps us, forgives us, and wants to take us to his eternal home.

God's glory was fully revealed at the cross

Jesus kept his glory hidden at first, but it was revealed step by step through his miracles, such as turning water into wine, healing the lame, feeding 5,000, walking on water, opening the eyes of the man born blind, and raising Lazarus. The greatest revelation came when Jesus went to the cross out of love and died in our place. Just as the ark was revealed when the curtain was torn, the cross shows the blood on the mercy seat, Jesus' perfect righteousness, and his victory over death. God's glory shines most clearly in the love shown at the cross.

Apply to Life

  • Let us worship the baby of Christmas as the Creator God who came down for us.
  • Let us remember that Emmanuel is with us, and let us walk with him in our confusion, sin, and need.
  • Let us look to the cross and see the greatest glory of God, his love for sinners like us.
  • Let us believe in him, receive his forgiveness, and hold on to eternal life with an open heart.
