Come See a Man (Jn. 4:4~42)
Jesus interrupts our routines and intercedes for us out of love, and he calls us to pray for, invest in, and invite others so that they may come and see the Savior.
Jesus Interrupts Our Routine and Intercedes for Us (4-7)
Jesus does not leave us in the routines we have settled into, and he did not leave the Samaritan woman in hers. She came to the well at the hottest part of the day to avoid people, but Jesus was already waiting for her there. He had been interceding for her long before she arrived, because he knew her and had created her. He has been praying for us for a long time too, and he meets us in the middle of our ordinary lives. Because Jesus came to us first, the ending of our story can change.
Pray with Purpose and Urgency for Those Around Us (35)
Life for others does not begin when we start speaking to them; it begins when we kneel and pray for them. Intercession sets us against the enemy, who does not want people to know Christ. Jesus did more than pray, because he came intentionally on a divine appointment. The fields are already white for harvest, so we cannot say we will get to it someday. None of us knows tomorrow, and our lives are but a mist, so we must act now.
Invest in Lives by Listening Between the Lines
Evangelism and disciple-making are built on relationships, and we invest in those relationships with our time, treasure, and talent. God gives these gifts as provision, not as our purpose, so we must use them for the lives he places in our path. Love does not see culture, race, or ethnicity; it sees a life with a need, just as God looked beyond our sin and saw our need. When we listen between the lines, we hear the heart beneath what people say. The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom to understand what is really going on in their lives.
Invite Others to Come and See
There is power in an invitation, because it gives people permission to come to God, into his house, and into his sanctuary. One study cited in the message found that 82 percent of unchurched people would start attending church if they were invited. Each of us has a pulpit, whether it is our social media, our family, our friends, or our coworkers. For some people, we may be the only Bible they ever read or the only word of God they ever hear. We should invite them first to the Lord and into his kingdom.
Like the Woman, Leave Our Jugs and Tell Others (28-29)
The woman came for water, but she left with living water. Once she believed, she set down her water jug and ran into the town she had tried to avoid, saying, come see a man who told me all that I ever did. When the truth takes hold of us, nothing else matters, and we are motivated to tell everyone about the Lord. God can work through us even when we feel unable, because the Holy Spirit gives us power to be his witnesses. God wants the world to come and see the Savior.
Apply to Life
- Let us kneel and pray for the people God has placed in our lives, including our family, friends, and coworkers.
- Let us invest our time, treasure, and talent in the lives of others with urgency rather than delay.
- Let us listen between the lines to understand the hearts and needs of the people around us.
- Let us invite the people in our lives to church and to Jesus, trusting that God may use our invitation.
- Let us, like the Samaritan woman, set down what holds us back and tell others to come and see the Savior.
