How God Sees Your Life (1Pe. 2:4~10)
God sees every believer as precious because we belong to him, so we can stand firm under persecution and proclaim the excellencies of Christ, who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Your worth comes from belonging to Christ (4-5)
Peter describes believers as living stones built into a spiritual house, and the Christian life is a daily coming to Christ in worship, not a single decision made long ago. Christ was rejected by men, yet he is chosen and precious in God's sight, and those who are in him share that same value. The speaker illustrates this with his son Enoch, who longed to be in his father's arms, showing that what matters most to a father is the one who belongs to him. God sees us the same way. We are precious to him, not misfits or rejects, and our identity rests on whose we are rather than on what the world or even our parents say.
Following Christ means sharing his suffering (6-8)
Peter reminds us that God's people will be persecuted, just as Christ was rejected by men. The speaker points to growing hostility in our day, from offense at nativity scenes to criticism of a player who prays after a touchdown. He recalls Jesus's words in John 15 that the world hated him before it hated us. Persecution gives us the opportunity to declare that Christ is worth more than anything else, and honor belongs to those who believe. God remains in control, and in the end he will right every wrong.
Proclaim the excellencies of the One who called you (9-10)
Peter calls believers a chosen race, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation, so that we may proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness. Once we were not a people, but now we have received mercy. Declaring his greatness begins with seeing his goodness in small things. The speaker tells of Naomi, who calls each toy her favorite, to show how focused joy comes from cherishing the grace given right now instead of dwelling on the past or the future.
