Is Your House Built on the Rock? (Ps 90:12)

2015.12.27Stephen Cha

Build your life on Jesus Christ and His grace, not on wealth, religious achievement, or self-righteousness. Then listen to and obey His word, and build your life together with other believers.

Number your days and look back and forward with God's faithfulness (vv. 12)

As 2015 comes to an end, we look back on many blessings, from the 45 of you who served at the Dongbu Senior Center and in the Cheongyang area to the prayer walk with our team from Australia. We also see unfinished projects and things we should have done. Psalm 90 teaches us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Looking back, we see God's goodness and faithfulness, and looking forward, we trust His promises as we walk with Him day by day.

Build your life on the solid rock of Jesus Christ

Two men heard the same words and built similar houses, but only the one who built on rock stood firm when the rain fell, the floods came, and the winds beat against it. The rock is Jesus Christ, who lived perfectly for us, gave His life in our place, and offers grace and forgiveness to anyone who comes to Him humbly. Sand is the wide path of wealth, ability, accomplishment, and possessions, where so many people seek their happiness. Our lives must rest on Jesus alone.

Religious works cannot replace a relationship with Jesus

In Matthew 7:21-23, some people called Jesus Lord, prophesied, cast out demons, and did mighty works in His name, yet Jesus said, 'I never knew you.' Their foundation was self-righteousness and religious achievement, and they sought glory before God and others. The words 'I never knew you' speak of a relationship, not ignorance. Jesus welcomes anyone who admits they are a sinner and needs His grace. God's love cannot be earned, and nothing we do can make Him love us more or less.

Our foundation is God's unconditional love

My roommate became a Christian in college in New York City. After a close friend took her own life, she prayed that if God was really there, she would do anything for Him if He told her He loved her five times. At a special meeting, a woman prayed over her and said, 'I love you, I love you, I love you, you are the apple of my eye, I love you, my daughter,' and God's love through the cross of Jesus became the foundation of her life. Even if you grew up active in church, you may still feel insecure and wonder if you are good enough. Building your life on God's love is the wise choice.

Listen to God's word and obey it, not just stay busy

Christian life is like a train that needs both a strong engine, the work of the Holy Spirit and God's grace, and tracks, which are God's word. Many of us stay busy with church programs and meetings, and we rarely slow down to open God's word and hear what He is whispering to us. King Saul spared the best of the spoils and then claimed he had obeyed the Lord, but God was grieved, because to obey is better than sacrifice. Make time to be near Jesus so that your heart is anchored in His love and you walk as His beloved.

Build your life together with others

In Matthew 16, Jesus says He will build His church on the rock of Peter's confession of who He is. Jesus builds us up together as His people, not only as individuals. Two are better than one, as I found when Jamie and I remodeled our kitchen countertop and tiles together, which I could never have done alone. Christian growth is meant to happen in small groups, where we pray together through decisions and struggles. When we reach out to one another, we find that the person we help also blesses us.

Apply to Life

  • Let us build our lives on Jesus Christ and His grace as our only foundation.
  • Let us slow down each day to read God's word and listen for His voice.
  • Let us obey what Jesus says rather than simply staying busy with church activities.
  • Let us join a small group and pray with others through our decisions and struggles.
  • Let us reach out to someone to invest in, as others once invested in us.
