God's Ideal Leader (2 Samuel 23:1-7)
God's ideal leader gives glory to God rather than to himself, is guided by the fear of God in pursuing justice, and is governed by God's Son, Jesus, so that he leads others to follow Christ.
Ideal leaders give glory to God, not to themselves (vv. 1)
David's last words are an oracle, a prophetic word from God and not merely his own. God honors David with three titles: son of Jesse, anointed of the God of Jacob, and sweet psalmist of Israel. The title son of Jesse reminds us that David came from a humble family and an obscure background, so our past does not determine our future. Whatever we are is by the grace of God, so we boast not in what we have done but in what God has done through us and in spite of us. Like David's songs, our gifts and art exist to express the beauty and majesty of God.
Leaders guided by the fear of God bring blessing (vv. 3-4)
Verses 3 and 4 say that when a ruler governs justly in the fear of God, he dawns on his people like morning light and like rain that makes grass sprout. True justice flows from the fear of God: we pursue justice because we revere God, we honor people because they bear his image, and we care for the vulnerable because they are valuable to him. Where justice comes, darkness is driven away and life is restored. The sermon shares how the church pursued justice for trafficked women in Southeast Asia and for three refugee boys, and how two pastors agreed within minutes to take them in.
Leaders governed by the Son of God lead people on mission (vv. 5-7)
David's house stands because God made an everlasting covenant with him, a covenant fulfilled through the coming of Jesus, the true David and true king of Israel. Blessings come only to those who live under God's authority, so David was an ideal leader only when he placed himself under God's covenant and law. True spiritual leadership moves people to be on mission with God, serving the church, the city, and the nations. Verses 6 and 7 warn that those who refuse to submit to Jesus are like worthless thorns, thrown away and consumed with fire, which points to eternal judgment.
Apply to Life
- Let us remember that our past does not determine our future, and let us boast in what God has done through us.
- Let us pursue justice for the vulnerable, because they are valuable to the heart of God.
- Let us be solution-minded leaders who bring water to the problems we face instead of gasoline.
- Let us submit our lives to the authority of Christ and point others to follow him.
