Judgment Day (Rev 20:11-15)

2010.11.21Rev. Eddie Byun

Judgment Day is the final transition from this sin-stained creation to the new creation. Those whose names are written in the book of life are saved by grace through faith, and all faithful service done for Christ is recorded and rewarded, while those outside that book face the lake of fire.

Judgment Day is the day of final transition (vv. 11)

When the great white throne of God appears, earth and sky flee away and no place is found for them. God will not destroy creation and start over, because Satan has not won. The earth will be purified, redeemed, and restored, and the era of sin will come to an end. Robert Mounts says this closes forever the chapter of sin and prepares us to enter the eternal state of glory. The new creation will be far more brilliant than the present one.

Every name is written in the book of life (vv. 12)

All the dead, great and small, will stand before the throne, and social position will mean nothing there. The book of life is God's family registry, and those who have placed their faith in Christ's saving work are written in it. God knows each believer by name and does not see us as a mere number in the crowd. This first judgment of faith depends on what Christ has done, not on our works. Salvation is a free gift, and that name in the book is a cause for deep gratitude.

Every thought and deed is recorded and rewarded (vv. 13)

The books record every action, thought, and motive, including the secret acts of love that no one else knows. Works do not decide salvation, but they determine reward at the final judgment. Work built on the foundation of faith will survive the fire and be rewarded, while work that is only hay will be burned up. Nothing done for the Lord is wasted, and even a cup of cold water given in His name will not lose its reward. We must not waste the years God has given us.

Those outside the book of life face the lake of fire (vv. 14-15)

Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire, which is the second death and the end of all evil. The phrase lake of fire appears three times in these two verses, underscoring how horrific this place is. It is not a party with friends but a place of isolation, regret, suffering, and pain. For those whose names are not written in the book of life, this is their judgment. The question for every hearer is whether our name is in that book.

Apply to Life

  • Let us trust Christ alone for salvation, knowing that our name is written in the book of life.
  • Let us serve the Lord with all our heart, since nothing done for Him is wasted.
  • Let us be generous with the money God has given us, because every gift is recorded in heaven.
  • Let us honor our parents, grandparents, and children as acts of love for God.
  • Let us examine our thoughts and motives today and live in light of eternity.
